Definition: English Assyriologist George Smith spent much of his early years in the British Museum, teaching himself cuneiform, where he came to the attention of Henry Rawlinson. Rawlinson saw that Smith was made assistant to the Assyriology department, where Smith worked at translations of Babylonian tablets. His most famous contribution is to the identification of the deluge stories in Chaldean mythology and the discovery of the Gilgamesh epic. Smith also conducted archaeological fieldwork at Nineveh (Kuyunjik).
