By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: American archaeologist and naturalist Charles C. Abbott was of the group of early archaeologists interested in determining the earliest human occupations of the New World; they surmised it was as old as the "old world" and sought artifacts similar to Paleolithic Europe, and failed at it.
